I am interested in the ability to be able to learn first hand about how nonprofit organizations run and how they work to address issues within their communities by being a part of one for a season. I am interested in a vocation of service and I believe this experience will give an even more tangible foundation to this pursuit.
On a more personal note, I am hoping to begin to determine the next steps after this coming year. In the hasty conclusion of my undergraduate education I do not yet have a clear direction as to where my next steps will take me and I look forward to structured discernment to this end.
I am also looking forward to living within a Christian community. I believe that one aspect of one's faith is a personal relationship between oneself and God. However, another aspect is God intermediating between our relationships with others; this aspect demands communal living. I believe a disciplined Christian community will work to acknowledge and develop both of these aspects of my own faith.
This summer Bergenworked at Kidder Creek, a Christian camp in Northern California. He primarily ran the ropes course, but also did a good deal of scheduling and raft guiding. He graduated from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA in May with a degree in Philosophy. While at Whitworth he helped lead their Outdoor Recreation program, and planned and led a number of trips for the student body. Last fall he spent a semester studying at Oxford University through the CCCU college program. Last summer he worked as a backpacking and rock climbing guide in Denver, CO for Expedition Backcountry Adventures.
